The Lower Merion Township Police Department Investigations Unit is staffed by some of the most experienced Police Officers in the department. The Investigation Unit consists of one Lieutenant, one Sergeant, and ten  investigators, two of which are assigned as juvenile detectives.

The Investigations Unit is responsible for the in depth investigation of criminal activity, prosecution of criminal offenders, and the proper disposition of all serious criminal cases. The unit also coordinates with and provides assistance to all other departmental units to ensure the thorough and complete investigation of all criminal matters. They also work with many other agencies, to include the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.

The detectives in the Investigations Unit receive special training in latent fingerprint development, interviewing techniques,  evidence collection and many other areas. Some of the investigators receive specialized training in the investigation of sexual assault, child abuse, narcotics law violations , arson investigations, and white-collar crimes.

The Investigation Unit also has several certified polygraph examiners, who conduct exams relating to criminal investigations as well as pre-employment examinations of all police applicants.
