COVID-19 Notice

We are constantly evaluating the daily information that is being provided by local, County, State, and National health organizations regarding the Coronavirus Virus (COVID-19) and the direction and guidance provided by the Pennsylvania Governor’s Office.

Out of an abundance of caution, the police entry level exam, scheduled to take place at the Lower Merion High School Cafeteria on Sunday, March 29, 2020, at 09:00 a.m. IS POSTPONED

Any new information regarding the exam will be conveyed to all of you as soon as it is known.  We will continue to email the applicant list with updates as they occur.  We will also update our website so please monitor these platforms for any new information.  We hope to reschedule the written exam for late May or early June.

Due to the postponement,  we will be extending our application deadline until April 20th 2020.

The Lower Merion Police Department will be accepting applications for the position of Probationary Police Officer beginning Monday, December 16, 2019 at 8:00 a.m.  There is a $30.00 fee per application.  The deadline for applications is Monday, April 20, 2020 at 4:00 p.m.

 Please note the online application has a separate fee paid to the Township’s third-party processing firm of 2.45% of the total transaction with a $2.45 minimum charge. Credit cards accepted include Discover, Visa and MasterCard.

Applications will also be accepted in person and via mail.   A check or money order for $30.00, made payable to Lower Merion Township, must be submitted with each application in order for it to be processed.  Applications delivered in person will be accepted by the Staff & Inspections Unit between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

THE COMMUNITY

The Township of Lower Merion, a suburb of Philadelphia, is comprised of sixteen individual communities, which include residential, commercial, and corporate office centers. The Township, often in conjunction with numerous community groups, offers a multitude of family oriented activities, an extensive parks and recreation program, libraries, and various cultural events. There are numerous institutions of higher learning located throughout the Township, two hospitals, and numerous public and private schools. The Township of Lower Merion Police Department has an authorized strength of 136 sworn personnel who are responsible for the safety and well being of approximately 60,000 residents living in a twenty-four square mile area.

REQUIREMENTS

  • All applicants must have reached their 21st birthday before the deadline for submitting completed applications.
  • Good moral character (please see disqualifying factors on the application). 
  • Must have completed sixty college credits from an accredited institution of higher learning or five years fulltime experience as a state or municipal police officer at time of application.
  • Applicants must agree in writing to establish permanent residence within the five county metropolitan area, including Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks, Philadelphia, and Chester counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania within six months following regular appointment.
  • Applicants must pass all written, oral, and physical agility examinations (MPOETC Standards).
  • Veterans' preference will be given to those eligible claimants who successfully pass all written, oral, and physical agility examinations. 
  • Applicants must be physically and mentally capable of performing the essential duties of a police officer.
  • Must have a valid operator's license.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Tattooing or body art of any kind shall not be visible while in uniform or in other required attire.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

    • $67,396 during Act 120 Training.
    • $75,554 upon successful completion of Act 120 Training.
