Substitute School Crossing Guard (SCG) – Two (2) Positions

Police Department/Traffic Safety Unit

(To work on an as needed basis to fill in for regularly scheduled part-time SCGs who work 4 to 5 hours/day, 5 days/week during school year)

 RATE                                     $15.00/hour

 SUMMARY
 
This position is responsible for providing the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections by observing gaps in the traffic and leading the children across the roadway or intersection.

DUTIES
Provide the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections by observing gaps in the traffic and leading the children across the roadway or intersection.

 Provides information and assistance to the public.

 Reports any crime or suspicious activity observed.

 QUALIFICATIONS
 High school diploma or the equivalent.  

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.  

Ability to instruct students in the safe crossing of intersections, often under adverse climatic conditions. 

Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. 

Must have Child Abuse History Clearance. 

Must be able to perform job functions in adverse weather conditions at times. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to drive 1 hour, sit for 1 hour and walk for 5 hours a day. 

Ability to bend, stoop and lift 20% of the day.   

Ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds for utilizing assigned equipment. 

Ability to use both the right and left hand for firm grasping, repetitive actions and fine manipulation.  

Ability to safely perform job functions outdoors up to 5 hours a day, including in severe or adverse weather conditions. 

Ability to perform job functions around moving vehicles, parked vehicles and traffic. 

Ability to be exposed to motor vehicle exhaust fumes.

TEMPORARY POSITIONS FOR REFUSE COLLECTION

The Township of Lower Merion needs temporary workers to collect trash and recyclables and/or drive a refuse truck (for those who possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL)).  Work on an as-needed basis; number of hours per week may vary but on average will be less than 30 hours per week.  $12/hr when collecting trash & recyclables; $17/hr when driving the truck.  No Township-paid fringe benefits.  Must pass pre-employment checks.  EOE.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES IN THE PLANNING DIVISION

Spring, summer, fall and winter paid internship positions to qualified students pursuing a course of study in Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Environmental Studies, Community Development or related field. The Planning Division operates within the Lower Merion Township Building & Planning Department. The Planning Division is responsible for land development reviews, long-range planning, mapping and analysis, historic preservation and code amendments for the community of 57,825 residents.

While interning at Lower Merion Township, students will be exposed to the operations and procedures of a local government and gain valuable hands-on experience in an office setting. Students will assist in the daily operation of the department and be assigned projects to assist staff.

Candidates for this position should be well versed in basic planning concepts. This internship is for those who enjoy a challenge and thrive in a deadline-driven environment.

The work schedule includes a minimum of 12 hours per week. Thursday and Friday office hours are preferred.

The Township Administration Building is in easy walking distance of the Ardmore Train Station (Paoli/Thorndale line) with frequent service. Inquire about the RideEco program.

INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITES (SPRING 2018):

  • Assist Planning staff, as needed, with various projects, including development reviews, planning studies, historic preservation, and GIS work.
  • Assist with daily administrative functions of the department.
  • Assist in public outreach communications regarding land development applications and long-range planning projects.
  • Assist in the administrative functions to prepare land development packets to various advisory bodies including the Planning Commission, Historical Commission, and the HARB (Historical Architectural Review Board).

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES IN TELEVISION & VIDEO PRODUCTION

Spring, summer, fall and winter unpaid internship positions to qualified students pursuing a course of study in television/video production. LMTV, Lower Merion Township's Government Access Channel, is carried on Comcast Cable and Verizon FIOS, and provides news and information to nearly 30,000 subscribers within the Township. Learn valuable hands-on experience in both ENG & EFP video productions.

While interning at LMTV, students will be exposed to the operations and procedures of a local government township. Many of the programs at LMTV support the local township's services (i.e. police and fire departments, parks and recreation events, library events, music concerts, LIVE broadcasts of government meetings, etc).

Students will assist in the daily operation of the station and be assigned projects. These projects will range from pre-production to post-production. For example, a student might be asked to design a graphic for a program, or edit footage together into a 30-minutes program, or even produce and direct a project from start to finish. No matter what the assignment, the student will follow the standard, video industry production procedures and be responsible for meeting and scheduling deadlines.

Candidates for this position should be well versed in basic video operation and engineering. This internship is for those who enjoy a challenge. Interns will be responsible for the administrative "paper work" associated with their projects.
