New This Month

  • On April 22, the Board of Commissioners voted to award contracts for the Township's first photovoltaic solar project, taking a significant step forward for clean energy in Lower Merion. The project includes installation of two solar carport structures with a 60 kW photovoltaic array that will offset 86% of the library's electricity and avoid 1,230 tons of CO₂ over the life of the panels. The project is made possible by a Montco2040 grant from Montgomery County in addition to Federal EECBG funding and tax credits.
  • The Environmental Advisory Council will host their annual Go for the Green event on Saturday, May 9 from 10 am – 1 pm at Ludington Library. This open-house style event will include local educators and exhibitors, recognition of this year’s Go for the Green Award recipients, kid’s activities, and raffle prizes. A live demonstration of how to use the new EV chargers in Lot 7 will follow at 1 pm. More information about the Go for the Green Awards is available at www.lowermerion.org/GoforGreen. Pre-register for the event HERE.
  • In accordance with Ordinance 4322, the use of gas powered leaf blowers will not be permitted from June 1, 2026 to October 1, 2026. The Township has a dedicated web page with up-to-date information about the ordinance. Visit www.lowermerion.org/elawns to find:
    • Timeline for full phase-out of gas powered leaf blowers
    • Information about restricted and permitted equipment
    • Resources for communicating the restrictions to landscapers and residents
    • Training content on how to transition to electric leaf blowers
    • Tips for proper disposal and recycling of lithium-ion batteries
    • How and where to report suspected violations
  • Registration for the Pilot Curbside Compost Program closed on April 1, 2026. 63 households are participating in the year-long pilot, representing a 15% opt-in rate. To date, the program has resulted in diversion of over 8,500 pounds of organic waste, putting the program on track to divert an average of 12 tons per year. Each household is diverting an average of 30 pounds per month from trash to compost.
  • LMTV produced an Electric Vehicle Charging PSA — find it at HERE.
  • This winter, Township staff and Sustainability Ambassadors teamed up to help residents learn about the impacts of English Ivy on the tree canopy, and how to safely and effectively remove it from trees. www.lowermerion.org/EnglishIvy contains resources and information. LMTV produced an English Ivy PSA. An English Ivy Removal Kit was added to the Ardmore Free Library’s new Tool Library. Hands-on Demonstration Days and Volunteer Removal Workdays introduced residents to proper English Ivy removal techniques, highlighted the importance of managing this invasive species, and gave residents hands-on opportunities to remove it in public parks and arboretums.
  • Lower Merion Township has been accepted into the US Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED for Cities 2026-2027 cohort. Participation in the cohort will guide the Township in pursuing LEED certification through data collection and identifying opportunities to improve community-wide sustainability.  As a cohort participant, the Township was awarded $3,200.00 to fully offset USGBC registration and membership costs.
