For decades, Lower Merion Township government has been committed to preserving the beauty and character of Lower Merion's natural resources. In more recent years, great strides have been made by Township Commissioners, staff, and advisory committees to minimize the Township’s impacts on resource consumption, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions, and to help residents connect with the natural environment.

In July 2021, the Township established itself as a local leader in environmental protection by being one of the first Townships in the region to create a full-time staff position to direct and manage sustainability initiatives. The Township Sustainability Manager has been tasked with charting a path towards a sustainable future for Lower Merion Township.

In 2023, the Sustainability Manager, with support from Township Commissioners, staff, EAC, and members of the public completed the Township 's first Sustainability Plan.

Paloma Vila, PE joined the Township in July, 2021. As Sustainability Manager, Ms. Vila is responsible for recommending and implementing programs that promote sustainability, assisting other Township departments in the reduction of environmental impacts and improving environmental performance within the Township.
