Tree Planting in Lower Merion Township

Each year new trees are planted on streets throughout Lower Merion Township. Tree sites are selected by the Shade Tree Commission with input from Civic Associations and Township residents. A priority of the Shade Tree Commission is to replace trees that have been removed along Township streets. Property owners who would like to have a tree planted in the right-of-way on their property should contact the Township Arborist at 610-726-7141 or fill out the request a shade tree form. Thereafter, the Township Arborist will inspect the site to determine if it is suitable for a shade tree. All considerations are taken into account for whether a tree can be planted and if so what species would be best.

Maintenance of Newly Planted Trees

Township residents who receive street trees will receive written instructions for caring for newly planted trees. Residents are not to place signs or other decorations on street trees. Weed whackers and lawn mower damage are very detrimental to young trees.

Maintenance of Trees on Private Property

Township residents are responsible for maintaining trees on private property. In cases where trees on private property interfere with traffic or present a hazard to the general public, the Township may take corrective action. Residents may call the Township Arborist to verify whether a Shade Tree is situated on private property or in the public right-of-way.

Planting of Memorial Trees

The Gifts for Parks program enables residents to support their favorite park or remember a loved one by donating funds for the purchase and installation of a tree in the park of their choice.
