The Lower Merion Township Police Traffic Safety Unit is responsible for the targeted enforcement of traffic regulations designed to facilitate the safe and smooth flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic throughout the Township. The Unit consists of a Sergeant, two Officers, and one Utility Person. The unit also supervises the activities of the Animal Control Warden and the School Crossing Guards.

The Traffic Safety Unit in coordination with the Highway Enforcement Team officers, enforce speed zones on major roadways by using ROBIC and ENRADD technologies. They also conduct commercial vehicle inspections and enforce truck weight limits.

The Police Officers assigned to the Traffic Safety Unit are all certified Crash Reconstructionists dedicated to investigating motor vehicle crashes that result in death or serious injury. These types of investigations can involve vehicle on vehicle, vehicle on fixed object or vehicle on pedestrian. The members of this unit have specific training in crash scene diagramming and the collection of forensic evidence, such as tire skid marks, and vehicle damage that can be used to assist in determining what happened in a collision sequence.

In addition, this unit conducts roadway surveys to determine the need for new traffic regulations or signals. They also work with construction engineers to design safe traffic flow plans for new construction or remodeling efforts in business and residential areas. This unit is also responsible for the safe removal of all abandoned vehicles in the Township.

Just as important as the duties mentioned above, are the educational programs provided by the Traffic Safety Unit, such as “Young Drivers” and “Physics of Crash Investigation”.

Citizen Requests

To request permission to close a street for a block party, complete a Block Party Request form (PDF) with the following:

• Location, Date, Beginning/End times, Rain Date if applicable, contact Person's Name, Address and Telephone Number
• Signed petition of neighbor’s names and addresses

Submit the Request form to the Traffic Safety Unit, in person or by mail, a minimum of two weeks prior to the event in order to guarantee barricades and road closure. Petitions received after that date will not be considered.

If road closure is approved, barricades will be delivered to the Contact Person's residence. They will be picked up on the first business day following the event.

Annually recurring events will not be considered as guaranteed. Petitions must be submitted annually as described above.
