Park Improvement Projects
This page will be dedicated to information and updates on Park Improvement Projects.
Ashbridge Parking Lot And Entrance Improvements
In 2013 the Township upgraded the parking lot and access road in Ashbridge Park. Attendance and activity at the park has increased significantly since completion of a walking path around the park’s perimeter and a new playground for children ages 2 to 12.
The parking lot was graded and paved increasing the parking lot’s capacity and efficiency. Conduit was laid for lighting in the future. The Montgomery Avenue access road was eliminated and all traffic entering and leaving the park is from the Airdale Road entrance which was also be improved. A Township's satellite material storage facilities are located in Ashbridge, so the entrance must be able to accommodate large trucks.
Flat Rock Park Improvements
Pictured is the Fish Ladder funded by DEP
Flat Rock Park is one of the Township’s best kept secrets. Located on the Schuylkill River in Gladwyne, the 24.3 acre park is beautiful yet underutilized. The Township is completing a series of projects that it expects will draw residents to the park and to the river, which, true to its name, is a “hidden river.”
Flat Rock Park is a 24-acre linear park located along the banks of the Schuylkill River in Gladwyne. It is considered to be a hidden gem. The first two phases of the park’s development involved building a walking path, landscaping, expanding the parking lot and improving the park’s boat launch.
The final phase will incorporate a currently undeveloped parcel of land into the park. The preliminary project scope includes, continuing the walking path, providing parking and building a picnic pavilion that overlooks the Flat Rock Dam and the Schuylkill River. (As funding becomes available)
Manayunk Bridge Trail Construction
Project Description
This project completed in the Fall of 2015, was a trail across the Manayunk Bridge linking the Cynwyd Heritage Trail to the Ivy Ridge and Schuylkill River Trails in Philadelphia.
Background
The Township worked with the City of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission to construct the trail across the locally renown Manayunk viaduct that links the 2 mile long Cynwyd Heritage Trail with the Ivy Ridge and Schuylkill River Trails and a vast regional trail network that will ultimately range as far north as Pottsville and as far east as the Delaware River.
Shortridge Memorial Park Streambank Restoration
Project Description
This project continues to stabilize the banks of the east branch of the Indian Creek that runs the length of Shortridge Memorial Park.
Background
Shortridge Memorial Park is an 11-acre linear park located in Wynnewood. The east branch of the Indian Creek runs through the park. The stream suffers from erosion and non-point source pollution, the result of excessive sedimentation from stormwater run-off and a series of storm sewer drains that drain directly into the creek.
The project scope includes restoring the streambank using a combination of natural channeling, and armoring the banks and planting a buffer of native plants. The third and final phase of this project will be completed as funds become available.
West Mill Creek Park Streambank Restoration
West Mill Creek Streambank Restoration Project to begin May 2024 - the Park will remain open, with Sections along the stream bank inaccessible.
This work is to comply with the Department of Environmental Protection, Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s), Pollutant Reduction Plan (PRP).
The project includes re-grading and replanting the stream bank and stabilizing the stream edge. Sections of the Park will be blocked off as the work progresses, but the Park will remain open. After re-grading, the stream bank will be stabilized with coir matting and temporary seeding until Fall, when the planting phase will begin. Please respect the fencing and keep the newly regraded/replanted areas free of foot traffic by dogs or people. This is essential for the success of the project.
Progress on this project is weather and park conditions dependent.
