Transportation Planning
A variety of transportation choices, along with safe and convenient access to employment, shopping and public services, are essential components of high-quality suburban communities. Attractive, tree lined roads with convenient connections to regional highways; safe, walkable neighborhoods and plentiful access to public transportation are particularly distinctive characteristics of Lower Merion and are among the core features which make the Township such a desirable place to live. These transportation assets provide Lower Merion with a competitive advantage over other suburban communities throughout the region and serve as the foundation of the Township’s circulation planning efforts.
RECENT & ONGOING PROJECTS & PLANS:

Transportation Demand Management: Township policy aimed at encouraging residents to alter their travel choices by using various modes, changing travel times, making fewer or shorter trips, or selecting different routes. The primary aim is to alleviate traffic congestion

Active Transportation Plan: The ongoing Lower Merion & Narberth ATP is being developed to serve as a blueprint for enhancing community connectivity through an active transportation network

Main Line Greenway & Pedestrian Mobility Planning: The MLG and the PMP are two ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing multimodal access in Lower Merion, further promoting sustainable transportation options in the community.

Cynwyd Heritage Trail: A multi-use pathway that links Lower Merion with the Schuylkill River trail system.
LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP PLANS:
- City Avenue Connectivity Study – study to improve transit access and increase transit trips (both rail and bus) to and from the City Avenue District (2011)
- Comprehensive Plan – circulation element covering all modes of transportation (2016)
- Feasibility Study for the Lower Merion Township-Wide Pedestrian and Bicycle Network – 2004 study integrated into the 2012 parks and open space plan identifying potential path/bike/trail system to link parks, natural areas, and the Schuylkill River with neighborhoods, business districts, schools, and adjacent municipalities
LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP POLICIES, CODES & RESOURCES
- Traffic Calming Engineering Policy – policy for how the township will considers the installation of traffic calming devices.
- Bus Stop Design – Standards for bus stop design in the 2022 Subdivision & Land Development Ordinance (SALDO), modeled after the Building Better Bus Stops guidelines

- Bike Montco – Study to advance bicycle mobility, including identification of a priority on-road bicycle network, as well as bicycle safety (2018)
DELAWARE VALLEY REGIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION
- Pedestrian Portal – Pedestrian and bicycle counts and other resources for pedestrian planning
- Sidewalk Gap Analysis – An analysis of every gap in the sidewalk/crosswalk network
- Level of Traffic Stress Analysis – An analysis of streets in terms of its level of stress for bicyclists
- Travel Monitoring Data – Traffic counts (vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian)
