Founded as the Ardmore Main Street Program in 1988, in 1993 the Township of Lower Merion established the Ardmore Business District Authority as a municipal authority. Originally known as Ardmore 2000, the organization is currently uses the name Ardmore Initiative.

Navigating the commercial district of Ardmore is made convenient with a variety of parking options. With a total of 881 spaces spread across eleven public parking lots within the area and an additional 102 spaces that will be available in the currently under construction SEPTA surface parking lot adjacent to the station, visitors can find a spot to accommodate their needs.

Established in 1993, the Ardmore Commercial Historic District is comprised of densely packed 1- to 5-story buildings with retail on the ground floor and residential or office use above. Most buildings date from the first half of the 20th century, with metal storefront framing and large storefront windows. Within this district, there is a clear urban pattern of contiguous masonry buildings, built on the sidewalk line.
