Gas Powered Leaf Blower Restrictions Begin June 1
In the fall of 2025, the Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners passed an ordinance restricting the use of gas powered leaf blowers as part of the Township's effort to create a cleaner, quieter community.
This includes restrictions on the use of handheld leaf blowers and backpack leaf blowers powered by gasoline or other hydrocarbon fuels, as well as portable generators used to charge electric leaf blower batteries. Leaf vacuums, walk-behind, tow-behind and stand-on leaf blowers are permitted at all times regardless of fuel type. Battery-powered and corded electric leaf blowers are permitted year-round.
The first seasonal restriction runs from June 1 through October 1 of 2026, followed by expanded seasonal restrictions in 2027 and 2028, and a permanent, full-year ban in 2029.
Landscapers are encouraged to watch this training video to learn how to transition to electric leaf blowers. Residents can learn more and access educational resources at www.lowermerion.org/ELawns.
Suspected violations may be reported through LM Report-It. Residents are also able to email bpcomplaints@lowermerion.org or call the Township at 610-645-6124 and leave a voicemail with suspected violations.
