Township with 'Retrievr' Recycles Clothes, Electronics
NOTE: In late 2019, the service formerly known as "Curb My Clutter" was re-branded as "Retrievr." This press release was edited in January 2020 to reflect that name change.
Since late summer 2018, Lower Merion Township has been making it easier for residents to de-clutter their homes after introducing convenient curbside clothing and electronics recycling. Lower Merion was the first community in Pennsylvania to partner with Retrievr that enables residents to easily schedule mostly free* collections of many unwanted items, via text.
As of mid-February 2019, about 4.5 tons of electronics had been collected from Lower Merion homes, along with well over a ton of clothing.
Households are chock-full of unused clothing and electronics. These are resources that can be returned to the circular economy rather than kept in closets, drawers and basements. While most of these goods are recyclable, the sad fact is that as much as 85 percent end up in a landfill or incinerator. Households may benefit from a convenient way to get rid of all this clutter without having to wait for an electronics event or wrangle it to a drop-off location. Clearly, households may recycle more with a convenient option.
That’s exactly what Lower Merion Township intended by engaging with Retrievr, according to Township Manager Ernie McNeely, “Lower Merion Township is proud of our efforts to reduce our environmental impact and save taxpayers’ money. It’s not often we get to announce a program that does both. That’s exactly what we found with this company. With their curbside collection program, residents get a convenient way to reduce their household clutter, taxpayers save disposal fees, and most importantly, clothing and electronics stay out of the waste stream.”
To participate: Simply text “PICKUP” to 757-70-FETCH (757-703-3824) to schedule your pickup. That’s it. If you’d like to earn rewards for your pickup, send in pictures of what you’ll be recycling. When your pickup day comes around, just set your things on out on the porch or garage. Retrievr will do the rest.
“We are excited to see Lower Merion Township take the lead and point to a solution for a billion-dollar used clothing and electronic waste problem,” said Bob Anderson, of Retrievr. “The solution is simple: give people a more convenient curbside choice, and they will recycle. Retrievr is proud to cooperate with Lower Merion Township to return clothing and electronics to their best and highest re-use and help save hard-earned taxpayer dollars for more important community needs than disposal fees.”
*Fees: There is a $35 convenience fee for each standard (non-flat screen) TV or CRT computer monitor; $100 per extra large TV, Rear Projection TV or Wooden Cabinet TV; and $10 for microwaves.
