Historical Commission

Regular Monthly Meeting

Chair: Christian Busch
Vice-Chair: Melanie Piltch

1. 2018-IA-24 – 163 Bala Avenue, Bala Cynwyd – Bala Theatre – Class 2

Application to upgrade the Bala/Egyptian Theatre to Class I status on the Historic Resource Inventory. The theatre is currently listed on the Inventory as a Class II resource. This application will be evaluated based on the new designation criteria adopted in July, 2018.

2. 2018-R-25 – 75 St. James Place, Ardmore – Suburban Square – Class 2

Application to install large new monument and parking signage at various locations on the Suburban Square property. All signs will be on the Suburban Square property and beyond the right-of-way. The Commission will assess the signs’ impact on the adjacent historic Suburban Square buildings.

3. 2018-R-26 – 405 North Highland Avenue, Merion Station – Class 2

Application to replace ten second floor wood double-hung sash windows as part of an otherwise interior renovation. Only the one-over-one rectangular windows will be replaced.

4. 2018-R-27 – 1124 Indian Creek Road, Wynnewood – Class 2

Application to replace all windows in this large house. The resource contains a large variety of window types and materials, including wood casement, double-hung wood sash, and metal casement. Replacements will replicate existing fenestration.

 5. 2018-R-28 – 1325 Old Gulph Road, Villanova – Class 1

Application to construct a mudroom connection between the residence and (non-historic) garage, construct a new projecting bay on the side elevation of the rear kitchen wing, and replace all windows in the house, none of which are original. Part of the “Harriton Farms” development, renovations to this resource were previously reviewed by the HARB. In 2003, all windows in the residence were replaced, so no windows currently proposed for replacement are original. First floor windows on the front elevation will retain their one-over-one pattern mimicking the original. Second floor windows on the rear kitchen wing will become fixed since operability is not possible due to interior reconfigurations.

6. 2018-R-29 – 805 Hagys Ford Road, Penn Valley – Class 2

Application to replace existing windows, remove and reconstruct the front entry vestibule, and infill the open porch at the side entrance. All windows are original with the exception of all third floor French casement windows, which will be replaced with casements exhibiting more consistent fenestration.
