Chapter 155 Zoning:

The Historical Commission shall perform those duties established by Chapter 88 and by Chapter 155 with respect to recommending to the Board of Commissioners those properties to be placed on or removed from the Historic Resource Inventory, distinguishing between those properties to be classified as Class I and Class II Historic Resources. The Historical Commission shall further give counsel to the Board of Commissioners, as provided for in this chapter and in Chapters 62, 135 and 155, regarding the preservation or demolition of those resources of historic significance located in the Township, but not within a local historic district.

Application for Review (PDF, 148 KB) - To initiate the process of obtaining a building permit for a property on the Historic Resource inventory (HRI), applicants must submit a completed copy of this application.

The Historic Resource Preservation Ordinance - enacted 3/15/2000, contains the references to all Code Chapters impacted by this ordinance.

Historic Preservation Awards

The HARB and the Historical Commission periodically co-sponsor awards. The 2017 Historic Preservation Awards were held on October 19 and took place at the Levering Mill Tribute House.

In 2017 the Township was proud to honor 9 historic preservation projects, 3 individuals for communication/education efforts, 8 past members of the HARB and Historical Commission, and Gerald Francis, recipient of the Robert DeSilets Award.

Demolition/Renovation Permit

       1   1032 Cedar Grove Road, Wynnewood – William Penn Inn – Class 2 – 2018-R-20

Application to install a solid fence around the yard for one unit in the converted multi-unit dwelling, extending along the edge of the property facing the Wynnewood Shopping Center.

       2   211 Belmont Avenue, Bala Cynwyd – Class 2 – 2018-D-9

Application to demolish abandoned mill buildings for the construction of a six-story, 85-unit senior living apartment building. The historic resource, the former Lee Shoddy Mill, was before the Historical Commission with a demolition application in 2002 and 2007. The applicant returns after a preliminary presentation in the April meeting, when no vote was taken.


Land Development Permit

       3   450 West Lancaster Avenue – The Haverford School – Class 2 – 2018-LD-21

Application to demolish a two-story portion of Crosman Hall (a non-contributing building) and construct a three-story addition in the same location. The contributing historic element of the site is the main school building, the rear of which faces the area of proposed construction.

       4   101 North Merion Avenue – Bryn Mawr College – Class 1 – 2018-LD-22

Application to construct a Student Life and Wellness Center and make related improvements to the campus. Three buildings would be demolished as part of the plan, none of which are listed on the Historic Resource Inventory, though one, known as “Cartref,” had been recommended for Class 2 designation in past campus surveys. Adjacent designated resources include Erdman Hall.
