Adopted Regulations- Gas Powered Leaf Blowers

New regulations restricting the use of gas powered leaf blowers in Lower Merion were adopted at the November 19, 2025 Board of Commissioners meeting.

By phasing out their use, Lower Merion Township is taking a step toward a cleaner, quieter community for all residents.

Key provisions:

Use restrictions apply to all persons and entities, including residents, commercial landscapers, contractors, and property maintenance personnel, on all properties within the Township.
2026: The use of gas powered leaf blowers will not be allowed from June 1 to October 1 .
2027: The use of gas powered leaf blowers will not be allowed from January 1 to April 1, nor from June 1 to October 1.
2028: The use of gas powered leaf blowers will not be allowed from January 1 to October 1.
Beginning January 1, 2029 and for every year thereafter, the use of gas powered leaf blowers will be prohibited for the entire year.
The use of electric-powered leaf blowers is allowed all year.
Use of gas powered generators to run corded electric leaf blowers or charge electric leaf blower batteries will not be allowed.

Battery Recycling

Proper disposal of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, such as those used in electric leaf blowers, is essential for protecting public safety and the environment.

Never put lithium-ion batteries in the trash.

The Battery Network provides a map of locations where lithium-ion batteries can be dropped off for recycling, free of charge (select "High Energy Battery above the map). Many retailers such as Home Depot, and Lowes collect lithium-ion batteries for recycling.

Lithium-ion batteries are also accepted at Montgomery County Household Hazardous Waste Events. HHW events are only open to residents. Residents may attend any of the scheduled events in Montgomery County, as well as those in Bucks County, Chester County, Delaware County, and Philadelphia .

Lithium-ion batteries are not accepted at Township Clean Up Weekends or Anything With a Plug events.

Past Events

On March 5, 2026 Lower Merion Township hosted an Electric Landscaping Training and Equipment Showcase. Over 60 landscaping professionals attended to learn about the Gas Powered Leaf Blower Ordinance, receive expert instruction on transitioning to electric leaf blowers, explore electric equipment offerings from 7 major manufacturers, and view live demonstrations of mobile charging and transport solutions. On June 17, 2025 the Townships of Lower Merion, Haverford, Springfield and Narberth Borough cohosted a free, half-day AGZA workshop and equipment demonstration event on commercial landscaping with electric equipment. The event was attended by 35 participants representing 13 different organizations (municipalities, lawn care companies, and institutions).
