The Care and Repair of Older Homes: Mortar Repointing Workshop

The Last of Three Workshops in a Series

Please join us for the final workshop in a series of three taking place this March and April.

Did you know that a majority of homes in Lower Merion and Narberth were erected before 1945? These houses were constructed using materials not commonly found in newer construction, including plaster, stone and brick assembled and pointed with lime-based mortars, and windows made from old growth wood. Unlike many of the unsustainable materials used in modern construction, the materials used to construct older houses can be maintained and restored rather than replaced.

This winter and spring, the Lower Merion Conservancy, Narberth Borough Historical Architectural Review Board (HARB), and Lower Merion Township HARB and Historical Commission (HC) are offering three workshops to introduce residents to basic strategies for the maintenance and care of older homes. If you live in a historically designated home, own a home that is older, or are simply curious about the building materials common to homes, these workshops are for you!

The workshops are offered to the public free of charge. Three venues in Narberth and Lower Merion will host this movable feast of home maintenance information.

Mortar Repointing Workshop: Thursday, April 27, 7 - 8:30 p.m.

If you’ve noticed growing gaps appearing between bricks or stonework, the repair process is not as daunting as it may seem. This workshop will help homeowners to understand the varied components of traditional mortars and demonstrate color matching, mortar mixes and re-pointing techniques.

Location: Narberth Borough Hall (2nd Floor), 100 Conway Avenue
Street parking is available on Haverford Avenue and in the lot just beyond Borough Hall.

Ray Tschoepe will lead the workshops. Ray earned his master’s in Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania and has worked in the field for more than 30 years – first as an independent restoration contractor and then as Director of Conservation at the Fairmount Park Conservancy. There, Ray and his staff worked to conserve about 20 eighteenth and nineteenth-century buildings. Since 2000, Ray has also taught a core course in Building Conservation in the historic preservation program at Bucks County Community College. He is also a regular contributor to Old House Journal.
