Chapter 155 Zoning:

The Historical Commission shall perform those duties established by Chapter 88 and by Chapter 155 with respect to recommending to the Board of Commissioners those properties to be placed on or removed from the Historic Resource Inventory, distinguishing between those properties to be classified as Class I and Class II Historic Resources. The Historical Commission shall further give counsel to the Board of Commissioners, as provided for in this chapter and in Chapters 62, 135 and 155, regarding the preservation or demolition of those resources of historic significance located in the Township, but not within a local historic district.

Application for Review (PDF, 148 KB) - To initiate the process of obtaining a building permit for a property on the Historic Resource inventory (HRI), applicants must submit a completed copy of this application.

The Historic Resource Preservation Ordinance - enacted 3/15/2000, contains the references to all Code Chapters impacted by this ordinance.

Historic Preservation Awards

The HARB and the Historical Commission periodically co-sponsor awards. The 2017 Historic Preservation Awards were held on October 19 and took place at the Levering Mill Tribute House.

In 2017 the Township was proud to honor 9 historic preservation projects, 3 individuals for communication/education efforts, 8 past members of the HARB and Historical Commission, and Gerald Francis, recipient of the Robert DeSilets Award.

1. Reorganization


2. 2020-R-4 – 130 Avon Road, Haverford

Application to construct a freestanding garage. The proposed garage has been rotated and expanded since it was last reviewed by the Commission in October, 2019. The applicant also seeks Conditional Use approval to encroach into the front and side yard setbacks and to exceed the maximum building area and permitted impervious surface.


3. 2020-R-3 – 423 Dove Lake Road, Gladwyne – Dove Lake Farm – Class 2

Application to modify a residence by removing additions and porches, renovating the historic core of the building, and adding a new rear addition. Application was tabled in January and now includes the replacement of a non-historic garage with a larger garage.


4. 2020-R-5 – 936 Rock Creek Road, Bryn Mawr – Class 2

Application to renovate and re-face a portion of the historic home and a non-historic garage. Currently half-timbered Tudor-style façades, these areas would be re-clad with horizontal siding and undergo other modifications.  


5. 2020-R-6 – 549 S. Bowman Avenue, Merion Station – Merion Elementary – Class 2

Application to construct modular classrooms adjacent to the school.


6. 2020-R-7 – 549 S. Bowman Avenue, Merion Station – Merion Elementary – Class 2

Application to replace gutters and downspouts and asphalt shingle roofing with new materials.


7. 2020-R-8 – 301 Righters Mill Road, Narberth – Penn Valley Elementary – Class 2

Application to replace stucco cladding on the exterior of the auditorium stage area with a new material. The options being explored are terra cotta panels and terra cotta tiles.


8. PRELIMINARY REVIEW – 1310 W. Montgomery Avenue – Ashbridge House – Class 1

The Township seeks preliminary comments on a concept to remove the rear Victorian-era addition to the main house and construct a new rear addition.
