Citizens have responded enthusiastically to the news that additional recyclables are now accepted for pickup in 2010. However, Township crews have noticed that many who are including cardboard with their recyclables are unsure of the proper disposal procedure.
A short video demonstrating how to collapse cardboard boxes is now posted on http://www.lowermerion.org/Index.aspx?page=765. In the video, Refuse and Recycling Supervisor Joe Przybyszewski illustrates cutting the cardboard to flatten the box to an acceptable size, the importance of removing plastic and/or Styrofoam from the box, and the need to tie the cardboard for ease of pickup. The maximum size acceptable for pickup is 4’ by 4 ‘ and 12 inches thick.
“Boxes that aren’t collapsed limit the mount of recyclables that our crews can collect,” remarked Don Cannon, Director of Public Works. “We appreciate the public’s willingness to participate in the recycling of new materials included for 2010. The addition of plastics #3 through #7 as well as corrugated cardboard boxes is already successful thanks to the cooperative response of our citizens.”
