The Historical Commission shall perform those duties established by Chapter 88 and by Chapter 155 with respect to recommending to the Board of Commissioners those properties to be placed on or removed from the Historic Resource Inventory, distinguishing between those properties to be classified as Class I and Class II Historic Resources. The Historical Commission shall further give counsel to the Board of Commissioners, as provided for in this chapter and in Chapters 62, 135 and 155, regarding the preservation or demolition of those resources of historic significance located in the Township, but not within a local historic district.

Application for Review (PDF, 148 KB) - To initiate the process of obtaining a building permit for a property on the Historic Resource inventory (HRI), applicants must submit a completed copy of this application.

Historic Preservation Awards

The HARB and the Historical Commission periodically co-sponsor awards. The 2017 Historic Preservation Awards will be announced in September and an awards ceremony will be held October 19 at the Merion Tribute House.

Projects that have been completed within the last five calendar years are eligible for consideration in this year’s award program. Completed applications with all accompanying materials must be received by Friday, September 22, 2017. The deadline has been extended one week from the original date.

516 New Gulph Rd, White House, Class 2, Haverford.

Due to a discrepancy in Township records, this resource (HA080) had been falsely listed under a past address, 515 W. Montgomery Avenue. Although the project is now underway, the architect comes to the Historical Commission to provide information about the project, which includes a new rear porch and other modifications to the rear of the residence.

ACTION

Conditional Use Approval

44 Linwood Ave, Ardmore – Class 2 – 2017-CU-12

Applicant seeks conditional use approval to convert a carriage house into a 2-3 bedroom apartment. No exterior modifications will be made.

Land Development Plan

306 W Montgomery Ave, Bryn Mawr – Bedford Hall, Harcum College – Class 2 – 2017-LD-11

Construction of a garden memorial to a deceased teacher in the front yard of this former residence, now used for Harcum College offices. The memorial will be oval shaped with a stone sitting wall, 24" high, with bluestone cap.

6/18 Lancaster Ave, Wynnewood – Palmer – Class 1 – 2017-LD-13

Owner proposes to construct a 4-story apartment structure for 22 units over an underground parking area located on the western part of the property. The historic resources on the property include a 110-unit apartment building and a chapel converted into a medical office building. Applicant previously appeared before the HC on May 23, 2016 and returns with modifications to the façade of the proposed new building.

Demolition/Renovation Permit

40 W Montgomery Ave, Ardmore – Former Suburban Sq. Strawbridge & Clothier – Class 2 – 2017-R-14

Modifications to the 1930 retail building, including replacement of all windows (including storefront windows), installation of metal canopies above ground floor, and installation of tenant signage and banners in various locations.
