The Historical Commission shall perform those duties established by Chapter 88 and by Chapter 155 with respect to recommending to the Board of Commissioners those properties to be placed on or removed from the Historic Resource Inventory, distinguishing between those properties to be classified as Class I and Class II Historic Resources. The Historical Commission shall further give counsel to the Board of Commissioners, as provided for in this chapter and in Chapters 62, 135 and 155, regarding the preservation or demolition of those resources of historic significance located in the Township, but not within a local historic district.

Historic Preservation Awards
The HARB and the Historical Commission periodically co-sponsor awards. The 2017 Historic Preservation Awards were held on October 19 and took place at the Levering Mill Tribute House.
In 2017 the Township was proud to honor 9 historic preservation projects, 3 individuals for communication/education efforts, 8 past members of the HARB and Historical Commission, and Gerald Francis, recipient of the Robert DeSilets Award.

1 325 Penn Road, Wynnewood – Maybrook – Class 1 – 2016-R-31
A proposal to construct paddle tennis courts and a warming hut structure in lieu of previously approved tennis courts. This recreational area is to be constructed near the southeast corner of the main historic resource, the Maybrook mansion.
2 435 Spring Mill Road, Villanova – Class 2 – 2016-R-23
This application was first heard in September, when the expansion of an existing Florida room was recommended for approval. The applicant returns with details for the expansion of an existing deck.
3 770 Mount Moro Road Road, Villanova – Appleford – Class 1 – 2016-R-32
A proposal to replace an existing historic greenhouse with a modern structure with similar specifications. The historic greenhouse is in disrepair and would be too costly to restore.
4 325 West Montgomery Avenue, Haverford – Merion Cricket Club – Class 1 – 2016-R-33
Proposed modifications are the expansion of a roof dormer on the 1928 Locker Room Building to accommodate an elevator, the construction of a wall on the roof the Locker Room Building to hide mechanical equipment, the removal of an existing door and roof canopy on the west facade of the Main Clubhouse, and the re-opening of a double door on the west façade of the Main Clubhouse.
5 1007 Smith Drive, Penn Valley – Class 1 – 2016-R-34
Proposal to construct a 14-foot wide addition on the side elevation. The addition will be built into a sloping hillside, necessitating a new basement-level door facing the driveway leading into the Belmont Hills Pool parking lot. The addition would add a new front door facing Smith Drive. Formerly Township-owned, this property has a protective covenant on the facades of the residence.
6 407 Mill Creek Road, Gladwyne – Class 2 – 2016-R-35
A proposal to demolish the existing historic resource, retain the existing (non-historic) garage, and construct a new home of modern design on the site.
